Our organization was formed in 1972, coinciding with the centennial of the City’s founding in 1872. In fact, Mary Pitney was an early and longtime member of the society, so it's no wonder she bequeathed her home to the Society. In addition, an endowment fund for the preservation, display and cataloging of the Society’s artifacts was established by longtime members Elbert and Velma Starns.
We are managed by a board of between 7 and 15 members, as ordained in our by-laws. That means the number of board members may vary from year to year; but no matter how many are on it, they are all committed to preserving and sharing the rich history of our town.
The main purpose of the board is to oversee both museums and to manage and display photographs, documents, and artifacts. In addition, along with society members, they act as host and guide for visitors when the museums are open. If you're with a small group, and are here when the museum is closed, just contact us a day beforehand and one of our members will be happy to give you a personal tour.
In addition, we own and care for the Milliorn Cemetery (also referred to as the Washburn Cemetery or Rickard Cemetery), and our first jail which was discovered in the 1990's and transported next to the Mary Pitney House.
Additionally, the board holds occasional fund-raisers to help support the costs.
We're a little city with a big history and are excited about sharing it with you!
If you live here you'll undoubtedly recognize several of our board members and already know their dedication to our community.
